Computer Learning Center
We still hear about the digital divide. In Ghana it is quite pronounced. Less than 2% of Ghana’s population has access to the internet. The Manye Foundation hopes to change that. In a small squatter settlement of migrant workers, the Manye Foundation has begun teaching the computer, even when access to electricity is rare. Students and parents alike came to learn on the foundation’s first computer. Now, everyone in the village wants to learn on a computer.
One of the foundation’s most recent and largest projects is the establishment of a Computer Learning Center where all students and parents can use technology to help them learn to read, write, do math, access information, express and develop creativity, and communicate. The center will be accessible to all students and their families free of charge throughout the day. In the evenings, we hope to offer our center as an internet cafe, with proceeds going to cover maintenance costs.
The computer has proven to be a powerful asset in this community, so now we want to use it to empower the weakest in society. Access to the vast resources on the internet can make a fantastic difference for someone starting a new business. Using educational software to improve your reading is a great tool when qualified teachers are limited. The possibilities are endless for technology, but we recognize that technology alone will not help anyone. Our Computer Learning Center is just one part of our broader work to make education enjoyable, accessible, and relevant.
To help us establish our free Computer Learning Center check out how you can donate equipment or software or give now to Manye Foundation’s general services which cover the monthly internet bill, the cost of electricity for the school, the purchase and maintenance of equipment and much more.
