Quality Teacher Training and Retention Program

Teaching requires you first learnLearning comes first Manye. So helping teachers be the best possible is essential to Manye’s mission.

Providing a quality education starts and ends with qualified teachers who enjoy learning and teaching.

Too often students do not want to come to school. That, however, does not mean they do not want to learn. Ironically, there are also many teachers who do not come to school everyday, making it even harder to students to learn at school. Our teacher training curriculum focuses on ways of making education enjoyable for both teacher and student. At the Manye Foundation, we strive to make learning exciting, but that requires teachers who have the know-how and resources to do so. Similarly, we emphasize creativity in the classroom and community and examine how teachers and schools can best encourage creativity. Our training program includes access to tested lesson plans based on the local curriculum and the available resources. After training, we strive to continue our educational support of our teachers by providing continued access to resources.

Teaching can be frustrating when you are not prepared. Classrooms in Ghana too often use negative punishment (such as caning) to discipline a student. When we ask truent students why they do not want to come to school, they often say because they will be caned. Although we wish not to ignore the local customs, we want to use proven techniques that encourage healthy learning. We explore the ways that each individual teacher and school can best merge local customs with educational objectives and thoughtful teaching methods.

We help teachers examine their own goals in the classroom. The goal of a teacher is not to teach, but to have students learn. We strive to promote useful techniques that encourage learning in every part of the day. If we remember these techniques, we can apply them to all parts of the classroom and beyond to promote an immersive learning environment. Our program is guided by the principle that effective education must be enjoyable, relevant, and accessible.

Finally, this program extends past training and helps focus on ways schools can retain teachers. We know that learning works best when students and teachers build a long-term relationship. We start retaining teachers by making teaching fun, but we also address systemic and local issues that prompt high levels of teacher absenteeism and turnover.

Providing a quality education starts and ends with qualified teachers who enjoy learning and teaching. The Manye Foundation hopes to combine its teacher training program with its Community Partnerships program so all schools in the region have teachers who make learning fun and meaningful.
